I plan on traveling to Kerala at the beginning of next year (possibly moving there) and I worry about flooding (coming from the US where hurricanes are prevalent). If I move there permanently, would I be better off getting a second floor apartment or higher due to flooding concerns or is this not really a concern during monsoon season?

It's beautiful during regular rains.  Things aren't great at the moment and could get ugly so it would be better for you to postpone the trip by a month at least.

Check for weather alerts. Kerala is most beautiful during monsoon. But if you are planning for Alappuzha during monsoon,better come after September. Else, all the forest and ghat regions would be magnificent at that time.

If u r a monsoon lover, it's the best time to visit kerala. But avoid travelling to hilly areas like munnar, Idukki, wayanad etc. 

If u wish to explore kerala, monsoon might not be the best time. As the rainy season comes with many hurdles and situations

Harsh monsoon season. If you are coming to Kerala for the first time, please avoid the commute now. But let me be very honest, monsoons in Kerala is not something to be missed. A very unique experience. The greenery and the wildlife flourishes at this time.

if your plan is get your family away from the boiling heat in the North - by all means ! 

But do keep in mind that travel gets difficult and complicated because its pouring buckets here ! 

If you can stay at a place with a good view of the tea gardens or something like that - sure .. Might be worth it ! 

But again like people here point out - the hills are not safe now in this weather ! 

Do keep your movement short if at all you plan to explore !
